ILIGAN City–The Supreme Court has ordered a status quo in connection with the order to transfer detained  Mayor Celso Regencia from the Tipanoy prison facility here to the Quezon City Jail-Annex in Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, a lawyer said yesterday.

Voltaire Rovira, one of Regencia’s lawyers, said the SC issued the order to maintain status quo while it was still “weighing the wisdom” of transferring the mayor from the Iligan city jail to the Bicutan facility.

Regencia has been placed under detention because of the murder and frustrated murder case filed in connection with  the Dec. 11, 2014 ambush of the convoy of the then congressman Vicente Belmonte Jr. near the Laguindingan airport. Three of Belmonte’s aides were killed in the attack.

Rovira argued that because of the SC order, the hearing of the case in Quezon city tomorrow need not push through.

Supporters of Regencia have been preventing moves to transfer Regencia to Bicutan. They have been blocking a road leading to the Tipanoy jail  since late last week. (nora soriño, sita asequia and nene lachica)
