An independent film titled “Bubog,” (shards) held its premier cast in two cities in Mindanao –– Cagayan de Oro and Davao City last Wednesday evening.

The film is directed and written by journalist and independent filmmaker Arlyn dela Cruz showing the government’s effort in the ongoing war against illegal drugs.

The premier night was led by veteran-actress Janice Jurado who said she tried to end her life four times when she was hooked on illegal drugs.

Sa umpisa lang masarap pero nakakasira sa ating sarili,” she said.

Jurado said the family can support their relatives who hooked on drugs by sending them to rehabilitation centers set by the present administration in almost all regions in the country.

Huwag natin sila pababayaan. Mahalin natin sila (drug addicts) dahil kailangan nila ang kalinga galing sa pamilya nila. Huwag natin sila itakwil dahil sila ay mga biktima lamang,” she added.

Bubog refers to the popular illegal substance, shabu, because it resembles shards of glass. Dela Cruz, however, is quick to point out that “Bubog” is also a metaphor for something shattered which cannot be mended.

“We are all victims and warriors. And to win this war, we should all be involved. Ang salamin, kapag nabasag na, may tsansa na magamit mo pa. Kapag tuluyang nabasag sa pagkakabagsak at naging pira-piraso, naging mga bubog, mabubuo pa ba ito? Tulad pa rin ba ito ng dati,” Dela Cruz asked rhetorically.

The film shows former-Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) regional director Willkins Villanueva of northern Mindanao whose participation involves the actual raids and footages of those shooting incidents related to illegal drugs.

The cast of Bubog includes seasoned actors and actresses like Elizabeth Oropesa, Julio Diaz, Juan Rodrigo, among others.
