THE Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) has warned all hotels and restaurants in the city against some unscrupulous individuals who would call their staff via phone pretending to be a city official before ordering food from them.

City Police Director Aaron Mandia cited an incident in the morning of March 7 where a caller identified himself as City Mayor Oscar Moreno booking for afternoon snacks and for a dinner, good for 35 people.

The same caller, whose voice sounded like that of Moreno also ordered eight bottles of whiskey and eight bottles of wine.

Mandia said the caller then will drop names by saying the said order is for the ongoing meeting between the Department of Health and the Philippine National Police (PNP) officials. The one in the line even mentioned the name of Dr. Lim of DOH.

In a police report, it was said that Mandia was informed by a city official saying he received a text message from a concerned citizen stating that such an incident really happened on the mentioned date.

“Hi, John! Ako gitawagan ang caller..iya gyud gi awat ang voice ni mayor but wala ko nailad sa iya kay naa gyud kalainan. When I asked are you using the name of Mayor Moreno? Iya gi off ang phone,” the text message reads.

The texter even gave the mobile number of the supposed client-caller 09652867841.

With this, Mandia is appealing to the general public especially restaurants and hotel operators to be mindful of the modus operandi the suspects are using.

Mandia said if ever hotel staff would receive such a call they have to make a counter check to know the veracity of the request.
