ILIGAN City ― In a routine session held this week, a water distribution company presented a proposal to the Sangguniang Panlungsod at Buhanginan Hills, aiming to tackle the longstanding water issues plaguing the city.

Acting city vice mayor Bernard ‘Tete’ Pacana informed reporters yesterday that he chaired the session where J E Hydro and Bio-Energy Corporation unveiled its proposal.

Pacana emphasized that allowing the company to operate would not constitute the privatization of the city’s water system, countering claims from opposing sectors within the city.

The proposal outlines plans to provide water access to areas currently underserved by the Iligan City Waterworks System, with the Mandulog River identified as the primary water source.

The company intends to lay its own pipeline to supply areas like Dalipuga and Kiwalan, as well as other barangays lacking connectivity to the existing water distribution network.

While the proposed rates stand at P50 per cubic meter, significantly higher than ICWS rates, residents have expressed willingness to avail of the service in order to secure access to water in their homes.

Despite discussions, Pacana clarified that the Sangguniang Panlungsod has yet to issue a “Resolution of No Objection” to the company’s proposal, citing the need for further processes such as public hearings.

Opposition to the proposal was evident during the session, with protesters displaying placards advocating against privatization.

The debate surrounding the proposal underscores the complexities involved in addressing the city’s water challenges while balancing concerns of affordability and access.
