Human right violations continue to be rampant under President Rodrigo Duterte’s reign of power, said Ritz Santos, III, executive director of Balaod Mindanaw during the launching of iDEFEND Mindanaw here yesterday morning.
Santos said the violations, mostly committed by state forces such as the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police are happening in Mindanao especially in tribal communities.
During the launching, the discussion highlighted the human rights issues in the southern part of the country including displacement of farmers and lumads due to militarization and mining.
“It is now very alarming that the state has slowly stripped its citizens of basic human rights. One can not anymore criticize mistakes committed by those in the government,” said Mabel Carumba, Mindanao Peoples’ Movement, South Central Mindanao.
She cited the impact of martial law in Mindanao where the victims are mostly Muslims. She said government forces have become abusive.
