Mindanaoan Meets World  by: Maria Irene Aserios

Back when I was still in high school (which now sounds like eons of light years ago), I envied some of my classmates who all sported colorful and branded backpacks. I didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth so all I could do then was be contented with my unbranded yet trusty hand-me-down school bag and hope that someday, when I have enough moolah, I could treat myself to anything I want including backpacks. Not necessarily for going to school anymore, of course, but for things I now enjoy and earn a living out of – like traveling!

Enter Herschel Supply Co. bags. Founded in 2009 by brothers Jamie and Lyndon Cormack, Herschel adopted the name of the small town where 3 generations of their family were raised. The company, whose goal is to create timeless products with fine regard for detail, is based in Vancouver, Canada.

And timeless products they are. Just check out some of my favorites out of their Fall 2015 collection. They’re all stylish yet very practical. I can already see myself bringing these backpacks during my upcoming trips abroad.

Materials used for the bags include cotton canvas, lustrous nylon and reflective fabric. The collection highlights elegant backpack silhouettes plus functional tote bags. According to Herschel, prints this season include “the whimsical Feather and wildflower Ruby, luscious Windsor Wine and dramatic Deep Ultra Marine, drawing from the eternal blue of an ocean dream.” That almost sounded poetic, yes?

Fellow wanderlust chasers out there can check out Herschel bags at their booth at the Ground Floor of Centrio Mall CDO

Meanwhile, as I previously mentioned here in my column, I was in Manila during the declaration of candidacies of both Senators Grace Poe (for President) and Francis “Chiz” Escudero (for Vice President). It was such a privilege to be around them during those crucial days. It was a different kind of high to be able to observe, mingle and just be right there in the middle of all the action. I am grateful for the trust.

Here’s a photo of Sen. Chiz, which I secretly took while he wrote his speech. More about this on my Mindanaoan.com blog.

That’s it for this week! Thanks so much for reading. Next week, I’ll share my SMB Oktoberfest grand launch experience with Rivermaya and Ebe Dancel.

Til next ish! Safe travels, everybody!
