WITH Cagayan de Oro City logging 84 dengue cases last September, the City Health Office (CHO) called on residents to double down on their efforts to eliminate breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

“(Due to the recent erratic weather), our dengue cases went up as per our expectations based on the two to three-year cycles. While it went down to double cases last September, we still need to do more so it won’t go up to triple digits again and we keep it down (for the rest of the year),” said CHO epidemiologist Dr. Teodulfo Joselito Retuya Jr.

Based on data presented during Monday’s press briefing, the city logged triple-digit dengue cases in six out of nine months this year — 102 last January, 111 in March, 118 in April, 218 in June, 236 in July, and 134 in August.

“In the first two days of October we logged 20 dengue cases and all of them are confined in the city’s public and private hospitals,” Dr. Retuya said.

Credit for the gradual decline of dengue cases last September went to the ‘Big Bang’ dengue awareness sticker campaign launched last August and led by Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy.

“At the same time, we activated our barangay dengue brigades tasked to eliminate potential breeding grounds like stagnant water in containers and sites,” Dr. Retuya said.

Dr. Retuya said dengue-carrying mosquitoes have a maximum life span of one month and depriving them of breeding grounds will cut down their numbers and reduce dengue incidence.

“Aside from early consultation on the first signs of dengue, we also need to protect ourselves so schoolchildren need to wear knee-high socks…fogging is also recommended in areas with a high number of dengue cases,” he said. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
