THE city of Gingoog and four towns — Magsaysay, Medina, Talisayan, and Balingoan — within the Gingoog Bay Alliance (GBA) in the eastern part of Misamis Oriental are on high alert after experiencing heavy rainfall since Sunday night, brought by Tropical Storm Kabayan (international name: Jelawat).

Talisayan Mayor Rico Taray, GBA Chair, stated that each municipal disaster risk reduction and management council in the four municipalities, including Gingoog, is both preparing for and monitoring the situation, as these areas are currently under signal No.1.

Marlon Pajo, Chief of the City’s Risk Reduction Management Office in Gingoog City, mentioned that the City Disaster Risk Reduction, police, and the Bureau of Fire Protection have been continuously monitoring Typhoon Kabayan in the past few days.

On Sunday night, City Mayor Erick Cañosa suspended classes at all levels for today, cautioning everyone, especially those residing in coastal areas, near rivers, or in areas prone to landslides, to remain vigilant for their safety.

Mayors from Magsaysay, Medina, and Balingoan, including Talisayan, are also declaring no classes at all levels, as stated by GBA Chair Mayor Taray.

Taray advised people living near rivers and areas susceptible to landslides to evacuate, noting that “evacuation centers in both the city and municipalities are ready.”
