NOISY firecrackers and fireworks lit up the sky here as the Filipino Chinese community here greeted the Year of the Wooden Dragon on Friday night.

Shouts of “Kung Hei Fat Choi” ring through the city as residents and members of the Filipino-Chinese community come out to the streets to celebrate.

The Bell Church in Barangay Macasandig this city, cooked and gave out hundreds of boxes of tikoy, a popular cake made of glutinous rice flour, water, and sugar for everyone who visits their temple.

“This is a good event for the local Filipino-Chinese community to celebrate together,” John Asuncion, Oro-Trade Investments Promotion Chief said.

Asuncion said for the Filipino-Chinese community, the Year of the Wooden Dragon is prosperity and abundance as they bid goodbye to the Year of the Rabbit.

The Cagayan de Oro local government spearheaded this year’s celebration of the Lunar New Year sponsoring the fireworks display at the Paseo de Oro Boulevard Friday night and a dragon boat race along the Cagayan de Oro River on Sunday.

Asuncion said more than 500 paddlers, officials, and guests came from all over the country for the two-day sports festival.

“Each team has its separate budget and they will spend their own money in the city,” Asuncion said.
