In a remarkable display of support, Mayor Uy even provided essential aid to the local Muslim community, mostly comprising sidewalk vendors in the areas of Cogon and Carmen.

Over 500 rice packs, each weighing 5 kilograms, were distributed at the City Tourism Hall, ensuring that the recipients had one less worry as they prepared to end their month-long fast.

“This initiative is a reflection of Mayor Uy’s dedication to serving all residents of Cagayan de Oro, whether Muslim or Christian,” said City Mayor’s Office Chief of Staff Sheila Lumbatan.

Lumbatan said that by organizing city government activities that cater to the needs of the people, Mayor Uy emphasizes the importance of community and togetherness in every celebration.

Earlier, Lumbatan highlighted that Mayor Uy’s priority is to uplift the spirits of the vendors, who often face financial hardships during the last days of Ramadan.

“This act of kindness demonstrates the city’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all residents, regardless of their religious beliefs,” Lumbatan stated, underscoring the message of unity and compassion that Mayor Uy and the city of Cagayan de Oro aim to convey.

Speaking on the distribution of rice packs, Mayor Uy explained that the goal was to provide relief and support to the Muslim community during this significant time.

He emphasized that the end of Ramadan, a period of fasting and reflection, should be met with communal support and care.

Mayor Uy stated that the distribution of rice packs is not limited to our Muslim brothers; he also ensured that rice packs were distributed at every event where city residents in need, including our Christian brothers and sisters.

“It’s part of the city government’s commitment to help our city residents in any small way we can,” said Uy.

The event, held at the City Tourism Hall, saw Mayor Uy delivering a heartfelt message to the Muslim community, especially to the vendors from Carmen and Cogon public markets.

He shared his respect and appreciation for their faith and practices.

“We join our Muslim brothers and sisters today in celebrating Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan,” said Uy, adding, “We may practice different religions, but our faith in God unites us.”

“To our Muslim brothers and sisters, Eid Mubarak,” Mayor Uy conveyed in his message.

Understanding the importance of the vendors’ livelihoods, Mayor Uy granted permission for Muslim sidewalk vendors to sell their goods outside the public market from 6 p.m. until dawn.

However, he stipulated that their setups should not exceed 1.5 meters and must avoid obstructing the roads.

“Today, as we join in celebrating Eid al-Fitr, I allow you to start setting up at 4 p.m.,” Mayor Uy announced.

“Let’s understand each other, and I humbly ask that you cooperate by following the regulations set by our Road and Traffic Administration (RTA) and city ordinances,” Uy said, adding, “Please comply to prevent chaos and ensure a smooth flow for your vending activities,” Mayor Uy appealed to the vendors.

Former city councilor Eric Salcedo, now serving as the city’s consultant on the night market, also joined Mayor Klarex in the Ramadan celebration, showing his support for the Muslim community.

“To our Muslim brothers and sisters, Eid Mubarak,” Salcedo stressed.
